My husbands computer is slow because it doesnt have enough memory. We cant put memory in because the computer is so old, so we are trying to delete unused items/programs from the startup taskbar. Any suggestions how to do this? I thought it was somewhere in Control Panel but I'm not sure where to go.

If you right-click on the taskbar, you can go to Unlock the Taskbar on the menu that pops up. Then, just right-click on the icon and delete it. Good luck!

You don't have to remove programs to free up memory, although it will release some disk space.

Some programs come with their own uninstall program.
-- Click Start, Programs. Look over the programs. Stop where you see a right arrow, you should get a sub menu. It may have an uninstall there.
-- If not, click Start
click Settings
click Control Panel
click Add/Remove
You will get a list of installed programs.
Click, one at a time, a program you don't want then click Remove.

To free up the memory you have:
1. Do not use wallpaper or screensavers. They run constantly in the background and, if they are comprised of graphics, consume memory. To do this, right-click on the desktop, click Properties.
click the Screensaver tab, select blank
click the Desktop tab, select none.
2. When you are on the internet, from Internet Explorer:
click Tools, Internet Options
delete cookies
delete files (offline files)
clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want)
click o.k.
3. About every two weeks, you should run a scandisk, disk cleanup, and a defrag. (These can be found in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.) The more frequently you run them, the less time they take.

May I suggest you get a book or two on Windows. I buy regularly from www.Amazon.com. I have purchased many used books at very good prices and all are in excellent condition.
