For a restore from your hard drive if you have XP:
Go to Start Programs Accessories System Tools, and select System Restore. Then, follow the directions pick a date, and do the restore.

You can either use a system restore disk that should have come with your computer or if you are using windows XP you can run the System Restore Utility and go back to a certain date were your computer was working good.

If it has windows XP should be the same with VISTA aswell just do this

go to Start > Run type "msconfig" go to the boot.inf tab then tick Safeboot let it restart. once it restarts it will boot into safemode and it will automaticaly pop up with a System Restore Feature in safemode, then just choose a date when you want it set back
