The crickets you buy from a petstore are fine to use. Just make sure you get both sexes - the females have a long black ovipositor that the males lack.

You may find it's easier to buy crickets than raising them though - especially if you're looking to use larger ones. I've raised them for pinheads for small frogs and salamanders, and it's very time consuming. It'll be even more so to raise the crickets to a larger size, plus you'll need more tank space to keep the babies separated by sizes (crickets are canabalistic, so the more room and hiding places they have, the better).

If you want to give it a try, see this webpage for some practical advice: http://skylab.org/~chugga/cricket/ - I really like the watering system this guy describes - it's simple and cheap!

You can breed crickets from a pet store but unless your going for a size that the pet store does not cover buying them would be a lot easier.

You can start with pet store crickets or you can catch your own or buy some from another source... anyway you get them as long as you have a dozen or so, you're good to go.
