How do you start to fly in Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King?

Once you have gotten to the part of the game where flying begins, check your inventory. There will be item, it is shaped like an orb and has a stylized gold bird in it. You can use that any where that is not a dungeon to take-off and fly. You can land any where, more or less.
