If your income, type of income, whether or not you can be claimed as a dependent will determine your filing requirements. If you are below the thresholds, you will not hear from the IRS.

If you don't make enough to be required to file, then nothing will happen.

If you have a refund coming, probably nothing will happen but you won't get your refund.

If you owe and your income was reported to the IRS (you got a W-2 or 1099), eventually you'll get a bill from the IRS, including penalties and interest.

Besides that, if you owe any tax, you could get into trouble with Uncle Sugar, If you don't owe,, or if you are going to be due a refund,, why wouldn't you want to file??
