The old version for PC had glitches galore and the gameplay was very choppy. Articificial intelligence was also pathetic, even on the most difficult setting.
I would say the board game trumps all other versions of the game. There's nothing like 5 people playing that game for 12 hours straight...

There are two PC games called Axis & Allies. The older one is based on the Milton Bradley board game. The computer AI is terrible but it speeds up play between humans. The second version is a realtime action game. Read about the games before you decide to buy at www.allgame.com and www.gamespot.com.

Axis & Allies is a board game, first and foremost. And a pretty classic one for wargamers. PC adaptations of it aren't very good. Their main purpose is to help fans of the board game play when they can't find 4 other friends. I would never tell someone new to Axis & Allies to play it on PC.

If you're looking for a war strategy PC game, you should get something designed as a PC game. Lots of PC war games out there...

I would say that although it is a little less complicated Risk is fun. If you haven't tried out Axis and Allies 1940 edition you should because it is awesome and also world war 5 is a cool semi-futuristic game. Lastly Tide of Iron is a quite complicated game that is fun.

The Board game is awesome.

I am not certain if there is a new version of the PC game you refer to. I know one came out about 10 years ago and the AI for it was..well... "severely lacking". If there is a newer version maybe they have corrected this problem.
