I am doing a report on my career of choice, a second grade teacher. I am having a bit of difficulty finding a website or even a straight out answer to my question "What education is required to become an elementary school teacher?"
Citations would be appreciated.

you go to college for 4 years and get a bachelor degree in education. some states make you take a test before they will give you certification. you practice teach before you graduate college to learn how to put your lessons to work in a classroom. it's an apprentice level job. some teachers get their master's degree, but mostly just the administrators of the school have that.

It might vary from state to state but here in California, you need a four year bachelors degree plus another year to year and a half of teaching courses (includes student teaching) to earn a multiple subjects teaching credential for teaching a self-contained classroom (mostly elementary). You don't have to have a bachelors degree specifically in elementary education - any degree will do. There are various tests you need to pass in order to earn the credential too but they've changed since I earned mine almost 10 years ago. I know you have to take a reading test (RICA) and a general knowledge/subjects test (it was the MSAT nine years ago). The government likes to constantly change the requirements almost from year to year so, unfortunately, I'm sure what you end up researching will change by the time you go for your credential!

Here's the website for the education department at the college where I teach. It describes the courses students must take and the exams students must pass in order to become a teacher. Of course, each college is different, and each state has different requirements (you should look up the education department for a state college or state university in the state where you live).

You need a Bachelor's degree in elementary education from an accredited college or university. Then you will need to be certified by taking a test in the state where you plan to teach.
