I live in a neighborhood where most all the neighbors have dogs and like to walk them in the evenings. What is the best way to keep the dogs from peeing in my flowerbed around my mailbox. The owners do not seem to care when their dogs do this. I have heard the spray to keep dogs away does not work. I have thought about tacks around the flowers. Sounds mean but the owners should respect the other neighbors yards. How would they feel if we went and peed and pooped in their yard. Not much fun mowing or walking in your yard and stepping in dog poop. I think it is pretty disrespectful to think it is OK for your animals to use the neighbor's yards for toilets.

Don't blame the dogs... blame their thoughtless owners.

Try some of these popular home-made dog and cat deterrents:

Pepper: You can make a simple animal repellent with black pepper and chilli pepper. It’s best to grind your own because the smell will be much stronger. Spread the powder around your mailbox to keep pets away.

Ammonia: Dogs and cats absolutely detest the smell of ammonia. Buy some cloudy ammonia and dilute with 10 parts water. Spray around the garden and yard, or where the dogs are "going", but always do a small test before applying to plants.

Many people swear by the "bottle of water" trick. Just fill a 2lt clear plastic soft drink bottle with water and lie it down in the garden. It looks awful but apparently dogs avoid it like the plague!

KEEP OFF dog and cat deterrent has been specially developed as a training aid by extensive laboratory screening. It contains a strong "perfume" which interferes with the animal’s sense of smell. It will also mask the residual odours of any previous excrement or urine. By following the simple guidelines printed on the pack you can train dogs and cats away from garden areas.

I've used the drink bottles, and they worked... but I don't know why.

Btw... Please don't use mothballs. Mothballs are very toxic to dogs, cats and birds - and although most animals are repelled by them, there will always be some dumb dog who will eat them... and possibly die.
( According to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), the ingestion of just one mothball can cause serious problems or death in dogs and cats.)

Or you could always stand out in your front yard with a camera, and take pictures of the jerks who allow their pets to poop in your yard.... and then post their photo's on your mailbox.

Movement triggered sprinklers. YOU can always turn them off for when you want to enjoy your yard, but if something moves in front of the sprinkler when its activated, it automatically turns on, twirls around for about 10 seconds shooting water, and then turns back off again. No dogs! And if the owner gets wet, well, thats just tough. Oh, and your lawn might just get a spritz of water every now and then. Not so bad, and not as violent as thumbtacks! Also, if you have a neighborhood association, being this topic up, and stress how important it is for you to enjoy your time in your yard, and the effort that goes into it. Be pro-active. Ask dog-owners to get together to come up with something as well. Perhaps those "poop bag stations". They are like plastic tubes with round cut-outs, stuffed with plastic bags (recycle, reduce, reuse! stuff your old plastic grocery bags in) for people to use. Strategically placed around the neighborhood...?

I put mothballs out in my yard where some skunks kept going under some bushes I had. They worked too! If something stinks bad enough to keep a skunk away, you know it's good. Don't put tacks out Betty, it's not their fault their owners let them walk there. Save them for their car tires :)

put some pepper where You dont want them to go. this is a temporary fix and, it will have to be replaced when it rains or, You have a heavy dew. I have heard that pepper spray, such as bear repellent works well also.

I suspect your mailbox is on public right of way and not on your property. That's probably why they don't worry about it. Try a small sign on a 3x5 card. PLEASE DON'T PEE ON ME in the flower bed. It will stop some of the people but probably not all.

Fencing is your best bet. If the dogs are large you may need more than just the short decorative fence.
