You don't say what your medical diagnosis is. The best thing for you to do is find out what your medical diagnosis is if you do not know (is it Colitis?) and research research research on the internet, ask people, get second opinions, etc. The operation sounds horrible, I wouldn't do it unless at least 5 knowledgeable people agree that it would be neccessary to stay alive. This isn't a disaster unless and until you have researched every piece of information and spoken with every knowledgeable person, and seen every doctor that you can, and everyone has agreed that you must have this operation or die. The heck with what people say about your face, this is life and death. I'm guessing they would shut up if they knew you had a life threatening medical problem. Soon you'll be in college and they won't matter anymore anyways.
Let your fear fuel your massive research efforts. I had a boyfriend once with the same symptoms who was dying of Colitis. He had several feet of intestines removed and recovered quite well and life is back to normal for him. He did have to have some sort of tube for a while, but it was only temporary.
Look and see if there are any support groups online for people with your medical condition, that would help you with support. Good luck and take care.

You've been through a lot at a relatively young age, so you have every right to feel that the world has been unfair to you. You need someone sympathetic to talk to. Does the hospital have a counseling service you could access? Check the Web - there may be support groups - people who have gone through what you have and have come out the other side.
As to the schooling, hospitals here offer tuition to students in hospital long term, are you well enough to access these? Could you get schoolwork from your friends to help you catch up? Are your parents able to pay for private tuition?
As to the way you look, the doctors have told you the facial swelling wont last, so relax about that. If people can't see past the swelling to the person you are, that's their problem, not yours.
Here is something you may not know. The Queen Mother (Queen Elizabeth the First of England) had the same operation as you are being told you need, and had a colostomy bag too. The only way people found out was when she was viviting hospital and visited a 16 year old who thought her life was over, because she had to have a colostomy bag. Then the Queen Mother revealed to the girl that she had had one for years! She had a family, traveled the world, ruled a kingdom and died at 101 years old. So there is hope still.
Good luck and speedy recovery.

Your health comes first. If the doctors are saying that you need another surgery, then do what you need to do to get better. Graduating a year later than expected is OK. I know a lot of people who have graduated a year later--including my sister and husband--and they've had great friends and relationships along the way. As long as you make it to the finish line, it doesn't matter if it's a year later--it's an accomplishment that you'll always be proud of!
As far as the swelling and other people making fun of you, they're not trying to hurt you intentionally. I know this is very difficult advice to follow and it may seem cliche, but seriously, do your best to not take it personally. They don't mean it personally and you can't let insensitive or inconsiderate people hurt you and get you down. Remember, the swelling is only temporary. Once you are healed you won't have that problem anymore.
I wish you a quick and complete recovery. Stay strong and remember that everything in life comes to pass--so will this difficult time.

Hi there !
Firstly - I'm really sorry about what your having to go through at the moment and If I could give you a big hug I would.
Your health Is the most Important thing in the world so this should be your first concern at the moment - coursework is Important but people have to understand that it's secondary compared to you becoming well again.
Surround yourself with people who care - there will always be people out there who will take the mick - just remember these people are not important and they should not stop you from going out with your head held high !
I'm on-line pretty much every day so how about you start going out - and yes those nasty people will still be out there - but at the end of the day sit in front of your P.C and talk to me or any other good friends that you have. As long as you feel you have good friends to support you those nasty people will become insignificant....
My e-mail is swearlyandco@yahoo.co.uk
Take care hon - I have my fingers crossed for you - e-mail anytime OK

Hey, i see your in a lot of pain. What you have to understand is that when anyone faces a problem they think its the worst problem in the world. I am in my last year of medicine. I recommend you go ahead and have the procedure done, if it will benefit you. Of course choose the best doctors to do it as it will minimize the chances of anything going wrong. Don't punish yourself because someone misdiagnosed you. About work you'll come around to it again, but for now worry about your health your health comes before everything. After your operation it will be hard at first but they will help you out and give you meds to make sure you heal as fast as you can. Ask God for help with a pure and sincere heart and you'll get what you deserve. Take care and best wishes...

I sorry that you are having so much trouble when you are so young. Yes, steroids can make you gain weight and get puffy, but when you are off them it will be much easier to lose the weight again and be happy with yourself.
From what you wrote it seems like the doctors have not yet made up their minds about the op or not. You need to do what is best for you and your parents can help guide you.
As for school work, at least where I live, the school can send work home and the department of education can send a tutor so that you don't fall behind. Have your Mom call the school district and see what they can set up for you so that you can stay with your class.
I wish you the best of luck and health.

i was ill when i was at school, and was off school for a lot of time because the doctors said that i had a brain tumour, and then when tht was given the all clear i fell and split my knee cap, i know this mite sound irrelavent, but my point is this... i didn't want to go bk to school because i was still on crutches and i had to do all my work in the special needs room as i could manage stairs. i had missed so much work because the brain tumour and the knee injury tht i thought all my friends had moved on and i thought ppl would take the mick out of me. when i went bk to school sum ppl did stare and laugh but because i held my head high and got through it, they saw me as a strong person and after a few days things were fine and it was like i hadn't been away. you will always have things thrown in your way during life that make you feel down, but it is staying strong and overcoming them tht make you the strong person that you will be in the future. i hope this helps. if you need to talk dnt hesitate to.p.s. sorry its so long x

I can understand your mistrust in doctors, but I think the operation is your only viable alternative. It's not going to be easy for you, but you will adjust to it. As for worrying about your swollen face, I can also understand how this is embarrassing for you (given you're only 15 years old), but try not to think about how other people's reactions to you will be. If they are cruel to you, then they're not decent human beings. Fortunately, there are some nice people out there who will be very supportive.
Discuss this with your family and your doctor. Let them help you make the right decision. Don't just give up. You've got your whole life ahead of you.

It sounds as if the steroids are a temporary treatment while you wait for the operation. Anyone making fun of you while you are this sick is just an idiot.
Please do what the doctors say and know that this will be over and your life will be given back to you. You are very young and have very good chances of recovering.
Looks are important to you and your peers but it's all very temporary. Just give yourself something to look forward to after the surgery is over.

Well, first of all---work on your spelling....PLEASE. Second, grow up. You want to DIE because you have "moon face" from the steroids? Oh, please. It does go away when you get off the prednisone. My niece was on it for a long time and when they took her off, it went away. So knock off that talk. Third......no one here can tell you whether you should have surgery or not. That's something you, your parents and your doctors need to sit down together and talk about. The pros and the cons of having this done.
