DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR!!!!

The mechanical brake is NOT an Emergency brake!

It is designed and engineered to be solely a PARKING brake.

You risk cables snapping and a complete lack of ANY means to stop your vehicle's forward momentum, short of collision.

Do yourself and your potential victims a favor:

Read the first line.

It's really best not to do this. #1. The back wheels have only 35% - 40% if the vehicles concentrated on the rear tires. #2.When you attempt to stop more of the vehicle weight thrusts forward. #.3 When you apply the mechanical emergency brake the rear end may and usually looses traction and slides. Keep in mind there's no master cylinder to apply brake fluid to shoes or pads. The emergency brake cable is either pulling ther brake shoes apart to cause friction on the drums or mechanically squeezing the small rear brake pads against the small ( compared to the front) rotors. It's a very uncontrolled way to stop a car. Certainly there to be used if the hydraulic braking system fails. Good Luck.

Take it from one who knows, the longer you drive the car with bad brakes, the greater the cost of the brake job when you do take it in, because you're doing damage each time you stop. More importantly, you're putting yourself and others in danger by driving an unsafe vehicle. You need to find alternate transportation until you can get this fixed. As someone said, the emergency brakes typically use the same brakes as the regular brakes but bypass the hydraulics -- so either way, you're shredding your brakes and risking an accident, a ticket for driving an unsafe vehicle (you're not the only one who can hear that horrible sound), or worse.

The handle is basically a cable to the rear brakes instead of hydraulic fluid.... you can help put more pressure to the rear, but they only do about 30% of the work anyway....so if you help giving it about 10% more of the 30% they stop, its going to pull about 33% of the car.... not very helpful. If you can do it yourself, get the brakes, they should take even a novice about 2 hours...autozone, most brake shoes with a lifetime warranty (even for wear for the next time) anywhere from $15-$40

next weak You will be asking how to remove the goldish burn from your wheels and paint that you got driving your car

the front pads don't pull away from the rotors they will continue to grind even when you don't apply the brakes Thain when the rotor gets thin engulf the inside pad will fall off and you wont have any brakes Thain you will get into an accident and possibly kill someone
i hope you rethink driving your car the costs will be much higher
rite now you can change the pads and 1 rotor it can be done for $100 drive more add a caliper $75 drive more add front bumper $500 +

just for fun drive at 25 mph pull the em brake and keep driving you wont stop its a parking brake designed to hold your car still after you park it was never intended to stop a car

The emergency brake only works the rear brakes,of course. You can use it but it won't stop any good and might even cause you to lose control.I wouldn't do that, you might hurt someone.

If it is all you have better than nothing but it is dangerous because it is not designed for stopping and you will wear out your rear brakes. I would get them fixed soon, try not to drive it.

e-brake, "emergency" brake. It is designed to stop you incase the hydralic brakes fail not to help you stopped until you get your brakes changed. Get it done today or more things are going to start wearing out.

If you want to kill yourself, that's your problem, if you want to drive a car that is unsafe and may kill others then you should be locked up. If your brakes are bad, don't drive the car. Rent a car until you can get it in. In fact, have it towed in to the repair shop. Be safe and don't kill a kid. Please.

It's not advised. E break is just to hold a car, not stop it.
