7 answers

3x + y = 8
-3x both sides
y = -3x + 8
The equation is in point-slope form (y=mx+b)

2y - 5x = 10
+5x both sides
2y = 5x + 10
divide by 2
y = (5/2)x + 5
As in point-slope form.

BOTH ARE LINES.

You mean "linear" equation.

Equations are linear equations when they represent a line. This can be found by determining whether they can be put into the form
y = mx +b (with m as the slope and b as the y intercept)
#1 Yes y = -3x + 8 so m (the slope is -3) and the y intercept is 8
#2 Yes 2y = 5x + 10 so y = (5/2)x + 5 so the slope is 5/2 and the y intercept is 5
Both equations are linear

Both are linear.

1. 3x + y = 8 Solve for y by moving the 3x to the other side.

y = 8 - 3x This is a linear equation with a slope of -3 and a y-intercept of 8.

2. 2y - 5x = 10 Solve for y by moving the -5x to the other side.

2y = 10 + 5x Then divide by 2.

y = 5 + 5/2 x This is a linear equation with a slope of 5/2 and a y-intercept of 5.

They are both linear because they increase at a constant rate. If you can't see that, just look at the coefficient of X. If it is a constant value then its linear. If the coefficient of X varied with X, then the equation would not be linear

OK none of these has an x or a y with an exponent higher then 1 so that means that they are both liner.
