Before you look at a companies threats, you have to know their opportunities first - they have room to grow in the Internet searchmarket (sitting at number 2), they have taken Viacom's websites tapping into places like MTV and Comedy Central, they got into the wireless MP3 player industry, they have a partnership with AT&T, multiple other partnerships, instant messaging, email, shopping, etc.
Now look at their threats - as number two they do not lead the market, but they haven't hit a marketing glitch as 'google' is now a verb...look what happened to kleenex. As number two they do not hold the power like google does - how hard would it be, with the market being saturated, for Yahoo to step up in the game? They tapped into Viacom as well as some of the other partnerships - are they overstepping their strategic plan? Is it a smart move to broaden their horizons? The website I went to asked the simple question about their target audience - do they expect the audience that hits MTV and Comedy Central to also hit Yahoo? Were there other sites or companies they should have teamed with - MySpace, Ebay, Napster, ITunes? Was it smart that they only partnered - what would happen if the other company flops or the product/ alliance proves to be faulty or damaging to Yahoo? What if the government steps in and breaks up the partnership because of unfair competition? From their marketing on the sites, do they do enough or are you bombarded with pop ups left and right? Does the annoyance overlooked because of the profit generation? How does competition with their multiple products on their site fit against the competition - Instant Messaging vs AOL, Email against places like comcast, hotmail, gmail? I hope this gets you thinking about where you can go with this.
