Quite legal if what she says is true. Truth is an absolute defense to defamation.

PB doesn't ruin a jacket (unless maybe it's leather or something like that), I would assume that most kids would have machine washable jackets, in that case, all she would have to do is wash it & no pb damage would be done. I think she wants you to pay her as a way to get money, to teach you a lesson, & to get you to stop teasing her kid. What you did was wrong & mean, but this mother should be talking to your mother to work out a solution, not telling you that you have to give her money, you're a kid, that's just not right. She's trying to bribe you kids. But she does have a right to call the school. Nothing legally will happen to you - the cops won't be after you or anything.

It is juvinile destruction of private property. Parents can be held liable. She wants $40? sounds reasonable since the whole mess is your fault! Learn a lesson,,,,school pranks are childish behavior! Next time try putting sugar in someones gas tank. That will cost your mom bout $4,000.oo.
I dont think she would understand the Prank idea then?

First, why did you put peanut butter on the back of their jacket...
Second, if your friends did it, why are you paying...
Third...Yes it is legal, but instead of calling the school, she should be calling the Police...

That's the real consequence of vandalism .
What you did was illegal , and what they are doing is legal .
You vandalize something , you pay to restore it .
Maybe this will help your friends grow up .
