They are preparing to close their fabric/craft departments nationwide. Could we unite and call the corporate office at :
1-800-925-6278
maybe if enough of us complain they will change their minds.
For me it would be more than an inconvenience because I am disabled and would have to drive 60 miles just to buy a spool of thread. Will any of you help me try to stop them?

Well, I can see some of you have never been to littlwe towns in the deep south. There is a Micheals 32 miles from me, a JoAnns 41 miles from me and a Hobby Lobby 60 miles away. In my small town we have a Brookshires, A Family Dollar, A Freds Dollar, a co-op (you've probably no knowledge as to what that is!) a feed store, a couple mechanic shops, a (WOW) newspaper, a couple of clothing stores and flower shops, jewelry stores, three schools (yes we can actually read and write down here) and we do get sick from time to time with some pharmacies and a hospital. But LOW & BEHOLD there are no fabric or craft stores here!
I was acvtually using the spool of thread thing as an example what I shoulds have said was If I need a zipper, spool of thread, stitch witchery, fabric, yarn, a pattern, a crochet hook, a knitting needle, a button, anyway....do you get the idea now???????

Well, now, Just Me, sounds like the masses on this site have pissed ya off! I can's say as I blame you. There are a lot of good people on this site who want to give and get honest reliable information and there are many who are just here to act like Jack***. Don't let them get to you.

Now, as to the WalMart problem....I understand what you are saying but I really don't think phone calls will do any good. They only care about the almighty dollar not the people. Wal Mart is a big problem in our country but I have to say we brought it on ourselves. If no one had ever gone thru their first door.....well, hindsight is worth just what it costs! I don't know the answer to the nationwide problems Wal Mart has caused. Someday maybe they will reap what they sew.

As for your current problem being handicapped probably means you do not have a means of transportation at your fingertips and as for buying your supplies {not thread!} [you see I read the questions before I answer them!] well....maybe the mom and pop shops that were pushed out will come into existence again soon in your small southern town. Until then, I'm sorry about your dilemma!

This has been discussed on quilting boards for several months and it has a lot of people upset. Not only because if Walmart is the only fabric/craft store for a long distance, but also because those of us who have alternatives to Walmart fabric cannot always afford the high cost at a specialty fabric store. I usually buy the lower cost fabric for quilts that I am going to donate, it's just too expensive to buy $10 a yard fabric for charity quilts. Hancock's is also in bankruptcy and closing many stores, thankfully not the one in my town.

I for one, did email my opinion to Walmart HQ but did not receive a response. I do not think they care what customers think and want, only what some oblivious MBA thinks can make a higher profit margin in the space.

I do buy some fabric online, but small items are just not cost effective to mail order and pay shipping. Hope you find an alternative.

The Jackson (Martel), California, Wal-Mart remodel'd and closed out all of it's DMC cotton floss last year.

Every time I went there I complained at the check-out. I invariably mentioned that I was *not* coming to Wal-Mart as often because I now had to get my floss elsewhere, so we now came monthly rather than weekly, and I'd rub it in by saying that we'd been getting electronics, etc., at the TARGET in the same shopping center where I got my floss. I don't know if one person griping can make a difference. I know I also encouraged others to do so elsewhere.
The Jackson/Martel Wal-Mart had cut down to just bundles of non-DMC floss. They have DMC back again now. We stop by nearly every week. I don't need floss every week, but I always pick up at least one skein of DMC. I *always* mention at the checkout how much I appreciate being able able to get my DMC there.
The bottom line is "without DMC, etc., I'd be shopping elsewhere". We stopped shopping regularly at K-Mart when it stopped carrying fabrics. Fabrics were the tie-breaker.
I can get Coats&Clark's floss and regular sewing thread at a *hardware* store within a stone's throw of my home. I'll drive 15 miles for my DMC for counted-cross stitch.

I'm pretty pissed about that too and you live in a HUGE town if you have all that stuff!!! My town is actually a village of 300 people. I have to drive 76 miles to get to a fabric or craft store. WalMart is only 43 miles away. It sucks! I will definitely call and support your initiative!!!

I find it hard to believe that any Walmart is 60 miles from any other store that would sell a spool of thread.

I have never, ever seen a Walmart that is 60 miles from other commerce.

You can buy a spool of thread at any grocery store...unless of course you live in one of those small Midwest towns where every single business (grocery, pharmacy, hardware, gas station, post office) all went out of business simply because a wal-mart was built.

In that case you will have to order it online. I know you have a computer.

Wal-Mart doesn't care about the little guys, they don't even care about their WORKERS!!!
They've tried to get Wal-Mart to pay health insurance, and they won't.
You'd be wasting your time.

Look for an internet store that sells the items you need.
