She started off with what she used and what she has left combined. Therefore add them...

Start with converting into improper fractions ...

1 and 1/3 = 4/3
3/4 = 3/4
2 and 2/3 = 8/3

So you'll be adding:

4/3 + 3/4 + 8/3

You need a common denominator which is 12:

16/12 + 9/12 + 32/12

Now you can add to get

57/12

Change this back to a mixed fraction and you should get:

4 and 3/4 cups

Add them all together. To do that get a common denominator. So,
1 1/3 + 3/4 + 2 2/3 =
1 4/12 + 9/12 + 2 8/12=
3 21/12

Divided 21 by 12 and you get 1 9/12, then add the 1 to the 3 and you get:
4 9/12 and 9/12 can reduce to 3/4 so the answer is:
4 3/4 cups of milk.

This problem is written sort of backward. Let's start by rewriting it.

Joyce had X cups of milk. She used (subtracted) 3/4 cup and used (subtracted) another 2 2/3 cups. She now has 1 1/3 cup left over. Mathematically, we have:

X - 3/4 - 2 2/3 = 1 1/3

Solving for X, we get
X = 1 1/3 + 3/4 + 2 2/3

To accomplish the addition, we need a common denominator. Since 3 will divide into 12 and 4 will also divide into 12, we can use 12 as the common denominator to rewrite one more time:
X = 1 4/12 + 9/12 + 2 8/12

Now all you have to do is the addition and then reduce your fraction.

for the fractions involved, use the least common denominator
1 and 1/3 = 4/3 ;
2 and 2/3 = 8/3

so
4/3 + 3/4 + 8/3 =
16/12 + 9/12 + 32/12 =
(16 + 9 + 32) / 12 = 57/12 which is also equal to 4 3/4 or 4.75

All you have to do is add what she used to what she has left.
1 1/3 + 3/4 + 2 2/3 = 4 3/4

The easiest way to add them together is to add 1 & 1/3 and 2 & 2/3 and then add the 3/4:

(1 + 1/3 + 2 + 2/3) + 3/4 = (3 + 3/3) + 3/4 = 4 + 3/4 = 4 & 3/4
