Sydney is the most expensive city in Australia. A recent worldwide study ranked housing in Sydney as less affordable than New York. Although the most expensive house ever sold in Australia is not in Sydney, the average price is most expensive, and it's only going to increase with urban consolidation. The same is true with rental prices.

Petrol prices are ludicrously high per litre, public transport (although quite cheap by world standards) is quite expensive by Australian standards, especially when you consider that Sydney's public transport is woeful, and such bad service shouldn't have such high fares.

Toll roads and motorways (roads which you must pay a fee to use) are positively schzophrenic when it comes to how much you need to pay at the booths, the ones in the south west are cheap, some even being completely free for significant portions, whereas in the north and north west of the city prices range from unfair to extortion. There is even an offramp that charges you almost three dollars just for using its 100 metre stretch of tarmac.

Having said that, I've lived in Sydney all my life, and I love it, and the pros outweigh the cons a million to one. The beaches are beautiful, the botanical gardens are gorgeous, the Blue Mountains are spectacular, the Opera House is iconic, the Bridge; magnificent, the culture is fun, the food is exquisite, the history is captivating, Taronga Zoo is fascinating, the architecture; intriguing....well you get the picture, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
