Do you mean a meteoroid? They constantly hit the Earth to the tune of over 2 metric tons a day....most are dust size up to baseball size. Less frequently larger and rarest of all are the biggies that can do significant damage. When meteoroids enter the atmosphere and emit light and heat, they are called meteors. When they hit the surface, they are called meteorites.
The scary event you are thinking of has been debunked as a "hit". The object, fortunatly, will miss our home planet. BUT do not rest assured...for there are many more out there with the potential to put a crimp in your day that have yet to be identified. One such visitor was a "near miss" not too long ago and we didn't see it coming! Sleep tight tonite.

Yes, meteors hit the earth every day. Most burn up in the atmosphere and never reach the ground.
