you have to find the combined overall force from the two tugs. i know that i can solve it finding the two components or by adding the vectors end to end, however i do not know how to implement them into this problem, will you please be kind enough to explain that to me

this is the picture of the problem http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s95/smoke91/untitled.jpg

Sum of Horizontal components = 10000 cos 40° + 15000 cos 20°

Sum of Vertical components = 10000 sin 40° - 15000 sin 20°

The resultant vector v

x = horizontal component
y = vertical component

x = 10,000*cos40° + 15,000*cos20°
y = 10,000*sin40° - 15,000*sin20°

Calculate the magnitude of the resultant vector v.

|| v || = √(x² + y²) ≈ 21,794.495 N

Calculate the angle θ of the resultant vector v.

tanθ = y/x = 1297.5739 / 21,755.834 = 0.0596425

θ = arctan(y/x) = 3.4132244°
