$1.80 ... basically round in increments of 5 cents (nickel's cent value) either up or down. Since it ends in a 9, you round up.

Say it was $1.73 rounded to the nearest nickel ... you would round to $1.75 which is the closest dollar value you can get from using nickels, i.e. increments of 5 cents.

$1.79 rounded to the nearest nickel would be $1.80.
Because:
A nickel is equal to $.05. Therefore if you are rounding it you have to round it until you get a number that ends in either a 0 or a 5. So you would compare the last digit of your number to see what the closest number that ends in a 0 or a 5 is. So you say Either $1.75 or $1.80. $1.79 is only $.01 away from $1.80 but it is $.04 away from $1.75.
I hope I helped. ♥

Nearest nickel just means to the nearest 5 cents. $1.79 is closer to $1.80 than to $1.75, so the answer is $1.80.
