Theoretically your d/l speed is 256kb. However you most likely will never hit that number. Many factors com into play not the least of which is how fast whatever server your connected to at the time can send you data.
There are plenty of web sites that will do a free speed check just to make sure your connection is up to snuff.

Just a note: I said 256kb (lower case) In case your not aware;
Lower case indicates kilo bits per second(Kbps) upper case indicates kilo BYTES per second. I used short hand Kb, not KB

Most likely you actually have 256 Kbps cable, not 256 KB cable. There isn't much you can do about the contention ratio on your line short of speaking to your ISP and getting a 1:1 service.

First answer correct. But, if others are downloading from the sight, this too will slow your Download Speed and the Server has to Multiplex everyone Downloading. They say Torrents help to speed things up, but, as of yet, I can not verify this. As many will not stay connected to share what they got. If, you understand Torrents. So, I have done faster downloads through a direct approach.
