Although transportation and communication changed a great deal, a woman's role changed less. Yet, there were some differences. Women began to use doctors more than midwives for birthing; the number of children they had dropped; they read more and cooked more and became more independent, although in rich societies they still were catered to, and in poor societies they always took care of themselves and their families. They spent less time on making clothes because ready-made was gradually coming into fashion and they also took a slightly greater role in running businesses, although they were still not equal in any way shape or form.
