why would the asker put the question to a vote??

because the answer is not decent, and they're waiting to vote "No Best Answer" so the sole answerer doesn't get free points and the asker gets his/her points back for the question.

Edit: Violet, you don't get any points for voting "No Best Answer"... but the answerer gets his/her asking points if the majority of voters vote "No Best ANswer".

If the asker doesn't pick a best answer, yahoo gives up and puts it to a vote, no matter how many answers there are.

If the person asking the question does not choose a "best answer" before the alloted time is up, then it will be put in "vote mode" for the community to decide. Then the poster has no control over who has the best answer other than his or her ability to now cast a vote, but it will still be decided by the community at this point.

I don't know...I guess I would to suggest the asker to pick that one answer to earn your 3 points

Well I had to do that the other day because it said "Check for best answer" and then I went to my answers (like 28 of them) and I couldn't see them - they weren't displaying properly so all I could do was put it to vote....weird Yahoo Nazis.

They probably just never went back to pick "best answer" so it automatically got sent to voting

because they don't want that one person to get it! When it goes in voting then you can click No Best Answer and still get your 3 points
