There are websites that will allow you to send a fax over the internet, but these will cost you money as it is a service that you will need to pay for. You can still send a fax with your computer if you have a fax/modem installed. Just connect it to your phone line, download and install faxing software, such as Fax Wizard http://www.download.com/Fax-Wizard-2000/3000-2064_4-10287795.html?tag=lst-0-3 and away you go.....

Since DSL allows both internet and normal data traffic over the same phone line, all you need is a fax capable machine and an outgoing number to send a fax.

Just be sure that if you have an answering machine to turn it off if you plan on sending or receiving a fax. The two don't play nicely with DSL.

You can send faxes over the phone line your DSL service is using (but not though the DSL service per-say).

Most fax machines operate using direct connection telephony.

An alternative would be subscribing to an Internet Fax Service. Then you could scan your document, e-mail it, and have it delivered to the recipient as a fax.

You can not send via dsl without either subscribing to a fax forwarding service or a SIP voice over IP line. The latter will require a VOIP adaptor, you can plug your laptop standard modem into this. Lines from these providers range from free provided you receive incoming calls regularly (some state 1 in 28 days) through cheap to similar costs to normal lines. The call charges tend to be very cheap. You can, of course, use your normal line.

You cannot FAX over a DSL connection, but you can still send and receive faxes over your regular telephone lines. You will need to have a dial up modem installed o your computer and connected to a phone line.
