Yes, it's fine. There is slightly more of a chance of getting an infection. I think that most people wait til the end of the cycle when the flow isn't so heavy. I have also heard that shower sex during your period is great for reducing the mess.
Make sure you use protection though, there is still a slight chance you could get pregnant.

It IS ok to have sex on your period. I know this will sound gross, but some guys seem to like it because it acts like a natural lubricant. It can get a bit messy so make sure you have a rag to clean up. Or even better, jump in the shower together! But just remember, that even if you have sex on your period, there still may be a chance to get pregnant.

I think if the guy was ok with it then it's ok! The only problem is there's a chance she could get pregnant if protection wasn't used but if it was she should be ok!
