One of my favourite books is Donna Tartt's 'The Secret History'; a wonderful psychological thriller and very unique.

I've yet to find another book which equally good characterisation or such a haunting 'feel' to it - anyone have any suggestions?!

I love psychological thrillers, but have read lots of commercial books, so am now looking for something a bit more unusual...

Many thanks in advance for your replies.

I should add that I'm looking for something more literary than commercial. I've read all the Dan Browns etc - so now need something more unusual and with a bit more depth. Cheers.

Not really similar but equally compelling reading:

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Restless by William Boyd

As an aside, please excuse me for pointing out that something is either unique (one of a kind) or not. The word 'unique' cannot be qualified (very, almost, extremely, etc.) Sorry , grammar is one of my fixations.

Yes, it was very good and quite eerie in places. I like Patterson as well (Along Came a Spider). His plots and characters become weird and tangled and motivated by all kinds of sick ideas and notions ... what could be better than that?
