I have a ton of server tapes at work that need to be destroyed because they carry sensitive healthcare data, so they cannot be simply thrown away. What is the best way to do this without sending them to a data destruction business?

have them incinerated... completely; nothing left but ash. other than using a professional degaussing service, this is the only other way to assure that the medium & its contents will be completely destroyed & unrecoverable. however, it would behoove you to only allow *trusted* people within your organization to over see this task, if it's not going to be you. you may want to confirm this if this is ok per state and/or federal government guidlines. they have very strict laws now on the handling & disposing of confidential data. if you don't follow them, your company can get seriously fined, licenses suspended, and possibly lose your job.

Demagnetizer. They used to sell those for bulk-erasing VHS tapes. Not sure if you can still get them nowadays. On the other hand, some VERY strong regular magnets will probably do. You know, those you see on Mythbusters... :)

Or hammer them into pieces and put them in the incinerator.

I'd imagine leaving them next to an MRI machine may do the same... ;) Perhaps not. Someone may take me seriously. :P

best way is to use a strong magnet on the tapes also you can micro wave them or send an elctromagnetic charge through it or you could always burn them hope this helps you

Cut them up. I'm not sure what kinds of tapes your talking about, but if I were you I would try to cut them up or brake them as much as I could.
