Am I being extremely dense or what, can anyone out there explain what their conclusion was to the end episode?????????

I believe Sam died but how confusing was last nights' episode? I was so disappointed in this ending. Why show him apparently fully recovered and talking to his Mum then showing him choosing to stay in 1973? This has been such a good series they should have done better for the last episode.

OMG it was fantastic. He WAS in a coma in present day, but when he went back he realised that he didn't want to be there - he lost all feeling, he had no challenges or excitement and therefore by "topping himself" he stood a good chance of returning to 1973, which he did.
It was absolutely superb and by far the best programme that I've EVER seen on British telly.
I WANT TO WATCH IT ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

Brilliant show...
Wished they had used Joanne Froggatt as his mum though. Albeit with make-up to look older. It wouldn't have cut into her schedule much, as she was only on the screen for a couple of minutes...
Terrific ending with them speeding down the road, and the "Test card" girl coming out and closing the camera...

they are making a new series apparently called ashes to ashes so the ending got the whole gang to still be together .
who knows what happened im just as confused im thinking he went into another coma jumping over the building but in real life he'd really be dead but that ending gets Sam in the new series so im happy i like john simms mmm lol

I love that show! But then, I'm in the US, so I haven't seen the second season yet (have to wait for BBC America to bring it back).
