I have a 2002 ford Focus. A few months ago I noticed one day while I was driving that the speedometer was bouncing between 60 and 70. It then droppped down to 50 then to 40 before returning to 60.

Since then it does this same thing everyonce in awhile. the other day when I was coming to a stop it jumped to 120 then back down to 0 before slowly descending as I came to my stop.

Its at the shop because I'm having the clutch master cylinder fixed and they can't get it to repeat the problem. They've hooked it up for a diagnostic and nothing is showing up either.

It is driving fine and I haven't noticed any odd noises or any other differences in the way it drives. Anyone gotta clue as to what could be the problem??

there is two possibilitys both are comon do the first one as its the cheepest buy and install a speed sensor they install in the trans if it still does it you need a new spedomiter head thats the part you look at both are comon to go out on that car and many times we replace them together anyway the spedomiter head will need to be purchased from the dealer as it will need to be programed for your car they will even set the milage to the corect milage

The most common reason for a "bouncing" speedometer needle is a faulty or bound speedometer cable.

Sometimes you can fix it with lubrication, and sometimes the cable needs to be replaced all together.

On many late model cars, the dashboard has to be removed to access the cable, so it can be time consuming. But it typically is not difficult or expensive.

it's a speed sensor and not a speddo cable. I don't think they have speddo cables anymore. have the sensor checked out, could be a dirty ground or just a sensor going bad.

The speedometer cable has lost its lubrication. Repair or replace.

could be that you engine is not grounded correct. my car did this and i fixed it when i noticed that the repair shop never put my engine ground back on. when i reconnected it the speedo was fine never bounced again.

your speedometer cable is broken somewhere or it may need greasing.
