The space race really didn't start until after the Soviets had launched Sputnkik 1. The space race was an effort to explore outer space with satallites, send humans into space and eventually to reach the moon. The Soviets were the first to send a satellite into orbit (Sputnik 1) and the first to send a human up ,Yuri Gagarin on the Vostock 1 in 1961. Alan Shepard became the 1st American in orbit 10 months later in February 1962. The final frontier was the moon and we all know how that one turned out. Although the Soviets actually reached the moon first with the unmanned probe Luna 2, the moon race was won by the U.S. on July 21, 1969 when Neil Armstrong took his famous 1st steps. The space race ended sometime in the 70's when both Soviet and US researchers became interested in different projects. The US claimed victory in the unofficial race because of the moon landing.

The Soviets got to the Moon first, too (just not with humans).
USA played catch up and eventually caught up and surpassed them, but in the beginning, the Soviets beat USA in almost every respect.

It is ambiguous from which point of view you see, but I say the Americans won because the Soviet Union collapsed and the USA is still here.

This is a race where both sides could be winners--kind of like special olympics. It was about more than propaganda victories. It was about technological improvements that benefitted everyone (except the military applications, and the US got the better of that by far).
