There are a lot of things that contribute to that in my mind...I'm not a conservative though...still definitely republican (think beyond this current Administration and the republicans as of late).
First of all, abortion. While I think there are a few certain instances where it should be available (rape for example), I don't like it at all. What right do people have to destroy what they did not create. Of course you created the child, but not the life....and I'm not trying to get all religious either. It just seems so ignorant tho think we've given ourselves the right to kill an innocent human being before they ever even get the chance to breathe on their own. In your 'engineering' sense, and not to be over-the-top, but it seems like it's ultimately just population control to me.
Global warming is another biggie. I understand something is going on, and I agree that 6.5 billlion people MUST make some sort of effect--however global or miniscule in scale it may be--but too many people are jumping on board with this too fast. First of all, the biggest scam going is this carbon credit thing. So many people are all-in when it comes to charging people to do this and that, essentially limiting what personal choices they can make in life, and what for? So we can all live in tiny "efficient" homes with tiny, little electrical cars while the Gore's of the world prance off around the country in their private jets because they can afford more "carbon credits"? And let me tell you, when the people are all convinced that another tax is going to save the environment, politicians are going to be the last ones standing in the way. We all know how broken our budget and tax system are, but you're going to give them more money? The same government that apparently is run by a chimp and a bunch of rich, conspiratorial fat cats, and one of your goals is to give them more money? Let capitalism run its course...afterall, the tax system didn't create the Industrial Revolution. We'll have new inventions, patents and competition for the bigger, better, faster, cleaner and cheaper models of everything that we'll all be able to buy, and contribute to lessening our environmental impact on our own, so we don't have to HOPE that the government will do it for us. Everyone's running over the hill and waving for us to follow wihout looking, but when we hesitate for the slightest bit--and question GW in the least way--we're instantly evil and wrong.
Guns are another huge issue. How in the world anyone could think that taking the guns out of liscensed and law-abiding citizens' hands could reduce crime in the badlands of America is beyond me. Check the figures, I'm sure they all match...city's are notorious for having gun violence problems as well as serious governmental issues--too much tax and too few solutions, corruption, etc. If you look closer, you'll find that the majority of cities are democratically controlled, and have been for sometime. Maybe I'm looking through glasses though, being in one of these cities, but it looks like the writing's on the wall to me. And think about it...doesn't it seem a little creepy to get a government to disarm it's own citizens? All while ignoring it's own problems?
And political correctness? Give me a break. Everyone's getting so hopped up on every little sentence anymore, that no one even realizes that they're stifling the very 1st Amendment that so many swear to protect.
The further left you go on the political spectrum though, the closer you get to the big bad "-isms"--socialism and communism. Both seemed to be great on paper; looking for an idealistic and utopian-type life where everyone can live in harmony and equality. Both, however, give the government entirely too much power over it's people, and republicans are staunch believers of keeping the government out of our personal affairs and allowing us all to be as individual as possible. I know, you'll argue the Patriot Act, but no one can ever cite a personal event where their life was dramatically affected, and seriously, you can't believe that they're listening to 300 million people talking on the phone. I think as long as your not calling the middle of the Afghani desert or swapping huge sums of money between Carribean bank accounts, you should be fine.
Finally...this is just straight opinion, but I've had very few good DEBATES---like an intelligent dialogue contributed-to equally by both sides---with a liberal. I have with democrats and some of my favorite arguements are with a socialist friend, but they're talking WITH me, not AT me. I feel like I'm being talked down to by so many self-proclaimed liberals...the elitists being the worst and Hollywood in particular. It's almost as if what they really want to say is, 'it's our way, or no way at all'. There just does't seem to be too many options or grey areas in liberalism, which is odd considering we live in a world filled with everything BUT absolutes...but like I said, that's just me.
I think that in all honesty--left, right or center--it doesn't matter. We all have the same goal of living out successful, and happy lives without constant threats and turmoil. The only differences are the routes we take, and to the right, most of the paths will only fit a little bit of government and conformity.

I'll take a stab at that---am a rabid moderate
first of all--liberal and conservative are bad words. when used by the other side
a more accurate gauge is on one side, a government that takes an active role and a controlling role in people's lives, versus anarchy.
Sigmond Freud---ah, never mind...
Liberals tend to believe that there is a solution for every problem
Conservatives tend to think that the best answer is that people ought to back off and things will work out.
we moderates believe that government ought to do the things it can do well, and stay out of trying to do things that government does not do well. Of course, it's hard to figure out which is which until one has tried and failed, and by then, the nnature of the problem has changed.
to create an environment where good things can happen for just about everyone is the purpose of government. to make those good things happen depends on the effort of individuals, families, communities, and.....AND...luck

The truth is liberalism is a disease that starts by creating victims and sheltering citizens from their own greatness, libs need victims as a facade for tax increases, they claim to be doing the work of the people, but are really feeding their own need to power. The liberals preach at the alter of government, they want to take God out of the public discourse and are among the most intolerant people. They are evil in that they want us to lose in Iraq and will not fund the troops, when the troops want to finish the mission. They are hippocrits on the environment, al gore flies around in a private jet claiming to do the people's work, but is an alarmist and liar. The are Un-American in that they want the terrorists to win and have invested in defeat and own the same premise. The worst thing for democrats is for there to be success in Iraq. The want to tax and spend like drunken sailors. Conservatives are more in tune with the people

Because they do, and I'm a registered Democrat really angry with the California liberals whom have forced their unwelcome will on my personal freedom in another state entirely. How's that for social engineering and if you don't like that one, blue-collar white people do not get equal consideration in disputes with corporations which are so afraid other races will play the race card while whitey sucks wind. McDonald's and other fast food chains are under fire because evidently they round up customers at gun-point and say "eat grease or die now instead of 60 years later." I have my liberal views, perhaps more moderate than some, but have no plans to change my party, just my world into one where they don't stomp me into the ground for my political opinions.

I'll cite the example of the following:
The concept of a 'spanking ban' to be proposed by a California Liberal Democrat, Sally Lieber. The gist of the idea is to ban spanking of children under 4. While it's noble to want to prevent child abuse, it smacks of two problems:
1 - It's not going to stop true abusers.
2 - How will this be enforced?
Also, the fact that the proponet is single and childless shows she simply has no idea about child rearing and needs to stay out of parental rights.

Because it was liberals / progressive who gave women the right to vote and encouraged women to go to work if that is what they wanted to do. We don't believe in keeping women in the kitchen (which some traditionalists believe in) if they don't want to be there.
Also because it was liberal Harry Truman who integrated the military. The southern CONSERVATIVE wing of the Democratic Party was so pissed off from this, they split from the national party and elected Strom Thurmond to run against Truman.
Then there was interracial marriage. Liberals believed people should be free to marry people of a different race. Other traditionalists did not. The state of Alabama for example did not get rid of its interracial marriage ban until 2000.
Liberal Democrats, liberal Republicans, and liberal organizations also fought to give minorities equal rights with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Again we were "re-engineerin society." The southern CONSERVATIVE wing of the Democratic Party was again pissed off and voted for CONSERVATIVE Republican Barry Goldwater that year instead. The conservative South has been increasingly leaning Republican on national elections ever since.
Now us libs are doing it again with our gay marriage and open acceptance of gays in the military.

Let's see...
Liberals tell us how much water we can have in our toilets, they tell us whether or not we can cut down a tree or dig a hole on our own property, they come up with programs that reward women for getting pregnant without holding a man responsible, they create speech codes so that they're never offended or have to defend their opinions, they want to take from those that earn to give to those who choose to be lazy, they demand that everyone accept them just the way they are, but refuse to accept anyone who thinks differently than they do.
Must I continue?

because liberals typically want to do horrible things like taking laboratory manufactured ingredients out the food supply to combat obesity or place restrictions on companies that sell harmful products, like cigarettes. The conservative claim is that free people should have the right to poison themselves.
