I work as a hairdresser in a salon that also has tanning beds. I am also white as a sheet! When I begin to tan in the spring, or put someone else in that's ghostly, I start them at five minutes, just in case. Sometimes ten is too much, depending on the strength of the bulbs in the bed and what pressure the bed is. I do five minutes the first day and increase one minute per day until I get to ten, then I increase two minutes a day until maximum time, which is 20 min in our salon. Hope this helps!

You should definitely go to a reputable tanning company...they would be able to tell you how long you can go in w/o tanning...I used to work at a salon, and all of our beds were top of the line...new bulbs all the time, so new "pale" clients we would only recommend like 6-7 minutes...It really depends on what type of bed it is...
Stand ups generally have a higher "wattage" than lay down...
Please just talk to the people working there so that you don't end up having a bad experience and burning yourself...I would also look into a good lotion to use...the salon should sell it and be able to sell you samples to try...
Good luck to you!!

I have the same exact problem. You should first go to your local drug store (CVS, Walgreens, etc.) and look for a sun tanning lotion, there are now special ones made just for tanning beds. Use that before you get in, and make sure you wear the protective eye goggles. You should start with a lower time, like five or seven minutes just to get your skin used to the UV exposure, it will most likely descrese your chases of burning badly. That's what I did. Then after a couple of days I increased the time in the tanning bed. Hope that helps a little.

If you've never been able to tan, I wouldn't recommend trying a tanning bad. You'll probably just burn like before. Some people, however, can eventually force their skin to tan by going to the tanning bed for a very short time at first (5 min) and gradually increasing it (after recovering from burns of course). If you simply have never tanned though, this probably wouldn't happen. Ask the person in charge of the tanning bed(s), they will be able to tell you for sure.

if you go to a reputable one they will look at your skin type and your tanning history and be able to tell you a good amount of time to start with.. you definitly would not start out at 10 minutes and if you are never able to tan and always burn, then they shouldnt let you tan, because you will just burn again. if they do let you it would probably start out for like 4 minutes and you can work yourself up. it will probably take a month or so before you see any noticeable results but you do not want to burn because that is really bad for your skin and increases your risk for skin cancer. (my friend just got her certification to work in a tanning salon and i helped her study!)

i tan and i do not start at 10 mins. i usually ask the girl at the counter what she suggests and i go for that long and if i feel that is too much than i will go a few less. you need to use lotion as well but only indoor lotion. getting burnt from a tanning bed hurts just as bad if not worse than being burnt outside. you may think 10 mins isn't that long but it can be especially if you have sensitive skin. i would start off at a low time and slowly build it up if your skin isn't getting red. use a lotion with a bronzer in it because that will help you get tan faster. good luck!

Have you signed up to tan yet? They might not let you do it. You have to fill out a sheet that shows whether or not you are too pale. I would say 10 would definitely burn you. I would start with 5 for you. Good luck.

There's signs in the salon that say if you can't tan in the sun then you probably won't be able to in the bed either. 10 minutes is crap...you will burn.
Be careful w/that stuff anyway. You don't need cancer. Nothing wrong w/being pale...it's kinda cute, ya know?

You may, it depends on your experience out in the sun and if you burn then. I would suggest you stay away from tanning beds though. They are very dangerous and you could get skin cancer. Try using spray tans, a professional could even do it for you. Its cheaper and it saves your skin from burning and the potential risk of skin cancer. Good Luck:)

Start out with 5 minutes and use a low sun block. I too, am very pale. After 5 minute about 2-3 times, work your way up in time. soon you'll be at 15 minutes and you wont burn. Also, you may want to use a towel to cover... ahem. certain things so they don't get irritated being so pale.
