A "donation" is a one time gift of money or property.

An "endowment" is the setting up of a trust. The recipient of the trust is (usually) not permitted to touch the principal in the trust, but may use the earnings of the trust for specifically permitted purposes.

Yes, churches can be the recipients of an endowment.
