Hiya Danni, I'm 27 and I've just found out I'm about 6 wks pregnant I work full time and so does my partner.

I really don't know why these people have to respond to your question when all they want to do is lecture you and give you crap basically....it's not right!

They obviously are just looking to shout at you and aren't actually thinking from your point of view.

The fact you have been caring for a sick elderly neighbour is for one amazing because I mean god you are only 17 and you have taken on that yourself! Good on you there should be a lot more people like you in this world :o)

Getting back to being pregnant, there are benefits and stuff you are entitled to I have heard that your midwife tells you all of this. I'm waiting to see my midwife for the first visit so I can't really say whether or not this is true but I'm sure if you look about and ask about someone will give you some info and point you in the right direction of where you go for all this kind of stuff.

Congratulations to you chick, please don't listen to the negatives on here they are just 'mouthing' off! Good Luck to you and let us know how you get on ok.

Take Care of yourself and baby :o)

hi u can claim income support from now, which u will be intitled to as for starters ur 17 and secondly ur preg. when ur 10 weeks preg u can claim milk tokens and 29 weeks u can claim maternity grant. all these can be claimed at the jobcentre if you explain your situation they will advise u in the right direction. you can also claim a comunity care grant if u still feel u need help money wise. i know how u feel when i found out i was pregnant me n my husband didnt have jobs, my husband was suffering from severe depression because his mother in law and 4 lads decided to jump me in my home while he was at work and since that day my husband didnt go back to work became a recluse etc. anyway about 3 months after my son was born my husband bit the bullet and went out n found a job hes still in it and enjoys very much, im now pregnant with my second child and studying at college. although i disagree with people using the government to live there lives on but in situations like urself and people who actually do want to get somewhere in life i believe that the government is a good fall back incase things dont go to plan.

Are you in the USA? If you are you can try WIC (Woman, Infant Child..I think). I think they might help out with food stamps and stuff like that. Also, do you and your boyfriend plan on getting married? If so you might be able to go on his insurance which would help with medical bills. I only think you're entitled to unemployement if you were layed off and I don;t think you can get disability because you don't have a disability. I'd check with your state (if you're in the USA) and see what their welfare policy is. I think it's nice of you to care for your neighbor but now you're going to have a family so keep that in mind that you are #1. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!

Unlike other users, I do have sympathy for teenagers who become pregnant and make the courageous choice to keep their babies.

It's not easy, and that is what government programs are for. You may qualify for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), which is basically cash assistance.

The WIC program can provide you with formula, juice, cereal, and other food items. WIC is for pregnant women also, so make sure you sign up for this service ASAP.

You can also get free health insurance through the government for you and your baby (Medicaid).

A great website to research these programs is www.USA.gov. This site provides information on government benefits, and links to state government sites, so you can find out where to apply.

Good luck, stay strong, and disregard all the judgemental comments people make!

The state likes you to have at least some income to give you things like foodstamps or cash assistance. I was in the same boat as you when I was 18, pregnant no job, me and my bf lived with my parents. The only thing I qualified for was the medical card. Which was good enough for me because they covered all 11,000 dollars!
We never really struggled either, so don't let anyone make you feel like it's going to be too hard!! Congratulations!

Hia Im not 100% sure if you can claim income support at 17 (it might only be from 18 onwards). The best thing for you to do would be to contact your local Jobcentre Plus office (number in phone book) and speak to them. Failing that you can contact your local CAB-they are brilliant. Good Luck.

If you feel well enough, try to at least get a part time job now before you get to the point where you won't be able to work. Start trying to save some money. Does your bf work? Go get on WIC and Medicaid so that you can get medical care. You sound like a responsible girl, good luck!

hi Danni, you will be given all the information you need about claiming benefits from your midwife upon delivery of your baby. you may well be entitled to an early maternity grant of £500 to buy things for your baby once your past 25 weeks. Have a chat with your midwife nearer the time. congrats and good luck xxxx

I hate it that you think you are entitled to something just because you got pregnant. But you can get on medicaid so that you will be able to get prenatal care and your baby can have health benefits at least for the first year. Call your local department of health and they will tell you where to go and what forms to fill out. You will also probably qualify for WIC. Look in the phone book, you should be able to find the numbers to call there.
