Democrats seem to have the motto "If something must be done, we must form an expensive exploratory committee to examine the most politically feasible means to address the problem & then create a massive bureaucratic program to address the problem while creating a different mess at the same time."
They are usually against "morality laws" but are quicker to pass laws against things like transfats. Republicans usually leave that kind of thing to the consumer.
Republicans seem to have the motto "If something is immoral (based on our interpretation of "immoral") we must have a law against it."
They used to be for small government when it comes to social programs, but many big spenders have infilltrated the party.
I'm more of a libertarian. I want the government out of our pocketbooks AND out of our bedrooms!

Basically, (in theory) Republicans are for small government - little or no social programs (such as welfare, medicaid, etc), & little government involvement in private or business affairs, which translates into lower taxes. They believe in minimal government assistance programs. Democrats are for large government - higher taxes, more endowment programs, etc.
Example: While the Republicans instituted Social Security, the Democrats are the ones that began taxing the benefits & made it a mandatory program (before that, the plan was that if you wanted, the government would "hold" the money & provide it to you at your time of retirement tax-free, as the withholding itself is a tax)
In practice, as you are probably well aware, this does not hold true - at least, not in today's society. There is an argument that Republicans are nothing more than religious nuts, and Democrats are communist freaks, but I find this to be mostly untrue. While some members of each party are probably very true to the party line, most have beliefs that cross party lines. And people of every (and no) faith are members of both parties.

Democrats generally believe in a stronger role for the federal government, greater regulation of business, organized labor, and social tolerance (civil rights, gay rights, pro-choice, etc.), wereas Republicans favor state's rights, business and commerce and social and religious conservatism.
The claim that Democrats favor higher taxation or that Republicans are more fiscally conservative has not held true. When Clinton was in office, the budget was balanced. Since Bush has occupied the White House, the budget has not been balanced and Bush has refused to raise taxes, while spending billions and billions of dollars on military conflicts. Some would call it reckless to spend our dollars (or borrow money in our name) to fund a war, rather than ask its citizens to pay for it with a tax increase.
Another misconception is that Republicans want less federal regulation and less federal power, but they prefer greater state power. Republicans want a federal law banning gay marriage (consitutional amendment), a federal law banning abortion, a federal law permitting prayer in school and the posting of the ten commandments in courts and schools. So the next time they tell you how much they want to "shrink government" or control those "liberal activist judges" ask them wny they want federal laws, not state laws, on almost every social issue.

A true Republican believes in less government intrusion into your life and fiscal responsibility.
A true Democrat believes that our strength as a nation is only as strong as its weakest citizen. Therefore, they advocate for programs to help the weak get back on their feet. Help them with loans for college, etc.

I wish I made a note of their name, but a Political Science professor made a study of the differences between the two parties, and concluded that the Democrats are the sex party, and the Republicans are the anti-sex party. You can predict someone's party affiliation by determining their attitude toward sex. If they have a comfort with and acceptance of sexuality, thye'll be Democrats. If they think sex is dirty and evil and think the government should clamp down on it, they'll be Republicans. Attitude toward sex conditions a lot of political attitudes on a variety of issues.

supposed to be the same
the old greatest republic was the roman republic and the voted on things and only once they decided together on a course of action was a leader appointed to carry out that action. So in a way they were democratic.
perhaps the reason they fell was they began appointing a dictator, ie an emperor.

Democrats believe in higher taxes and that the government should run things like health care.
Republicans believe in low taxes and that people in the various states should decide on their own which are the best ways to deal with issues like health care - but on a private basis not run by government.
Democrats tend to believe that all abortions should be legal.
Republicans tend to believe that all abortions should be illegal.
