The bigger problem is that both candidates have major weaknesses...not their race or gender. A strong black or woman candidate would be a welcome change.

I am completely with you on this one. I personally would not have a problem voting for a woman or a black man to run this country. As many others posters noted, white men haven't been doing too bang up of a job.
Unfortunately, there are still way too many people in this country that will not elect either into office yet. I have a "friend" who is a democrat through and through, and he might vote for Obama given the chance. But he would vote republican if his other choice was a woman. We have come a long way in this country, but we still have a lot of strides to make.
I for one, and it sounds like the original poster also, am not ready to risk the presidential election on this go around no matter how I personally feel on having Clinton or Obama in office. I will not vote for them in the primary because for me, it is more important to have someone who will have a real shot at winning the national election for the presidency. There are just too many political issues that need to be resolved immediately to add another hardship to the democratic party's candidate.

Age is wisdom, and wisdom has answered your question 16 years ago, and that answer is no, a female and an African-American are not a bad idea for the Democratic party. 16 years ago, my high school Civics teacher, an elderly but wise Caucasian woman, stated to the class that we will see an African-American president. She stated that it may not happen in her lifetime, but she knew for a fact that it would happen in our lifetime. Even though I was young when Jesse Jackson ran for president, I had this feeling he would not win. However, when Obama announced his run for president, this unique feeling ran through me, and I could vividly see and hear my Civics teacher. I knew he (Obama) was the one. It may sound crazy to you, but when our elders say something will happen, if we sit back and watch, it does. Oh, and my high school, and high school teacher are products of South Carolina. The deep segregated South, where even if you thought that as a Caucasian person, you dare not say it, and 16 years ago. Again I say, Wisdom has already prophesied the dawn of a new day.

Kind of a no win situation for the dems, which is sad because it leaves no choice but to vote for whatever Rep is running or not vote at all.
Obama has some good qualities. He's certainly not some run of the mill vine pilot. He's well educated and well spoken. I just don't think he has the experience to end the fiasco that the Reps have gotten us into.

properly.. Sarah Palin did no longer run for President so she did no longer might desire to compete or be interior the accepted public spotlight. in case you think of the male Republican applicants could have been basic on her, then you certainly are delusional. Hilliary replace into attempting to play with the great boys so she had to take the warmth. Edit... some Republicans (to illustrate, Debra H) do no longer even understand their very own occasion. "Democrats .. the occasion of the macho adult adult males.. or so they think of.. save the little spouse abode, barefoot and pregnant... and that they call the Republicans backward.. ha!" First, human beings accuse Dems of being a team of feminist... now the Dems are a team of macho pigs... that's it? even if, you overlook concerning to the certainty that the Republican baptist choose their women to be barefoot and pregnant.

Because you have a problem with George Bush, means you do not want another republican in office? Thats kind of closed minded. There would be nothing wrong with a black or woman candidate. I don't think Hillary or Borak are the best the dems have to offer however. If they are, and one of them wins, esp Hillary, we are in deep crap as a country. She will make Bush look like the best thing we have ever had. As far as Imus is concerned...he can go to hell.

Your right. Most voters are older and white. Not the type to be enthusiastic about a woman or a black man. They may decide a democratic congress is enough and vote republican or not at all.

If HIllary gets the nomination she will probably try really hard to find a black running mate.
I suspect Obama has more integrity - but the odds are you will get at least a black or a woman candidate, and maybe both.

Its good to put things Plural when you're talking about more than 1 thing. Your question should have read:
"Is a female and black candidate for the Democratic Party a bad idea?" Or
"Are females and black candidates for the Democratic Party a bad idea?"
Either way it doesn't matter what sex or color they are, as long as they have good grammar.

Picking the BEST person for the job IS the issue.
Race and sex have no bearing.
When a candidate is campaigning, he (or she) is trying to sell himself to you. He is trying to get you pay for his product with your vote!
So far I've not seen a black man or any woman is THIS campaign season the makes ME want to buy what he is selling!
Show me the product I want and I'll vote for you.
It has nothing to do with race or sex. It has ONLY to do with the PRODUCT!

it may not be the best time but a change like this has no good time.
and none of the other candidates are as good as obama or have enough connections like hillary.
but the republicans ones aren't very good- they don't have any universal followers
