I can't afford to do my own taxes. If I do, I always miss something and get penalized, therefore, I am forced to hire a CPA or go to a tax agency to do my taxes. This is a result of the extensive tax laws and regulations that require anyone to be a full time student in order to get it right. It isn't proper that as tax paying citizens we are required to hire someone to evaluate our earnings and expenses in order for us to get a rebate on money that the government garnered on our paychecks. The result is many hedge on their tax claims, others claim fewer dependents in order to insure they will get a return each year, others just don't pay taxes by working under the table etc. The people rationalize because they can, and it is how they fight back.

I have a CPA do my taxes because I can't keep up with the changing tax laws. However every year it seems he does something wrong that I catch or I put something down wrong that I catch or I get a late 1099 or a change in a 1099 and have to file an amende return. Frustrating.

I use CCH ProSystem fx. It's a professional tax program. I also use BNA Income Tax Planner to estimate my income and tax liabilities during the year.
