i think it means that the cylinders are a little worn.
try adding any "high milage oil additive" like lucas or stp, they help exactly with this problem
the car may run for quite some time, but eventually more and more smoke will come out, and the engine will have to be rebuilt.

Are you sure it's smoke and not steam? Condensation in the pipe will come out of the tailpipe as steam until the water is burned off.
