Actually, gonavy got it wrong, the density of pumice rock is more than that of water. The reason pumice floats is because it is very porous with little to no permeability. It is gas in the pores that are less dense than water, making the overall density of the rock less than that of water.

the only rock proven to float is pumice. all other rocks are known to sink.

but if the density of the rock is less than water, it will float, as in pumice's case
