As several answers point out, this question could be a joke.
As several others point out, it depends one what language you are referring to, since the count varies.
Furthermore, some languages have writing systems that do not use phonetic alphabets.
An interesting fact is that the English alphabet does not fully cover all the sounds in English words. For example, there are not separate letters for "ch" "sh" and "th" -- I believe Russian does have separate letters for these sounds.
