We recently had about 4 baby bunnies born in our backyard.
Their hole is right on the side of our house.
They just left the hole about 1 week ago if even that.

Today I was on the side yard getting the hose to fill the bird bath up and I looked in the hole and it wasn't empty anymore, there was one of the baby bunnies in it.

It was weird because I hadn't seen any of them really since they left the nest.

So I looked at it for a few moments and saw that it's eyes were kinda half-open/half-closed and it wasn't moving or anything when I made noises.

So I took a twig and I poked it and quickly found out that the baby bunny was dead.

I was trying to figure out how it could've died.

Recently we had a cold-snap the past 2 or 3 nights where it was in the 20s at night. At first I thought that might've been the cause of death, but bunnies are full of fur and made to live outside.

So I was wondering if maybe it was diseased and came back to it's hole to die?

Opinions?

Nature takes its course in ways we often don't understand. My bunnies mated twice and the first time all of the babies made it, the second time i did everything as before to care for them yet one died.
Also, sometimes if the mother senses that there is a "defect" in the bunny she will not feed it as much as the others because she knows it won't make it anyway. This happened with a baby duck that i rescued and had to care for myself, as the mother was going to let it die.
Hope this helps, don't feel too bad about it there's nothing you could have done!

I would guess the most likely explanation is that the rest were taken by a predator - fox? A cat even?

If the bunnies were big enough to leave the nest, maybe they left and the little dead one was sick already and couldn't leave.

Nature's harsh!

It's hard to tell. This may sound cruel, but it's probably just natural selection.

If you're concerned you could contact your local animal control office and find out if there's any illnesses going around with the rabbit population.

Maybe their mother was taken by a cat? They may have been too little to survive without their mother.
