For durability, IBM/Lenovo has most often beat all the others many times over. If you want to go hog-wild on power (but you probably won't) go for the super-expensive T60 recently reviewed in PC magazine. Otherwise wander over to the IBM website and compare models to see which one meets your needs. They have a vast range.

I can say, I have a relatively new HP and a 2003 IBM A41 Thinkpad. If I ever get a new laptop, I'll go Thinkpad. The A41 has been dropped several times, bumps and bruises, and is just *medium* power, and is still a "sherman tank* workhorse! (The HP, purchased in 1/06, is a souped up little critter, performs quite well, but hardware went south twice in the first year; excellent technical support, though...)
