You are following the populat misconception that Popeye's Chicken was named after the famous sailor.

It wasn't. Al Copland, the founder of Popeys in New Oleans was a big fan of the movie "The French Connection" and named his first outlet after Popeye Doyle, a character in the moive.

Using the sailor came along after the franchise took off, but originally, it was not named for him.
