No the Catholic church slowed down advancement in the west, and contributed to the dark ages. Rome before the church flourished, and much of its knowledge was hidden by the church. This has nothing to do with christanity but with chruch's lust for power.

This is a very difficult question to answer because it is not entirely clear. Are you asking What is the Catholic Church?

The word catholic is a generic term actually that refers to the universal church, the body of all true Christians. What you most likely mean is the Roman Catholic Church, which is headed by the Pope in Rome and traces its origins to the 1st century.

It is actually debatable if the Roman Church helped or hindered the development of civilization in the west after the fall of the Roman Empire, or it's move to Constantinople. Some people point to the fact that the west went into the dark ages and this was made even worse by some of the rules and leadership of the Roman Church. Others will point to the fact that the Roman Church maintained literacy and any learning that was going on from 400-1000 was happening inside the Church organization.
