If you do not know why he is doing this, you have no business having a stallion anyways. Any half-sane person knows you do NOT keep a stallion in with mares and FILLIES... there's getting to be just as big of a problem with people breeding junk horses as there are with the "backyard Dog breeders". "Just because they have one with a uterus, and another one with testicles".
Reasons why I feel this way:
1. If you do not know the basic behavior patterns of an intact male horse, you do not have the understanding of just how dangerous they can be, when the hormones kick in. Yea, everyone has "The Nicest Stallion In The World", he's SUCH a Sweetheart, and he's NEVER hurt a fly! B.S! The ALL can get nasty, and you'll never see it coming.
2. How old are these "Fillies" that he has bred already? A "Quality" horse Breeder, that is breeding to IMPROVE the breed, not just to "Make Money" has a breeding program, not just a pasture with a bunch of horses in it. And they would know WHY he was pulling out manes.
So, to answer your original question, it's not necessarily a "Mounting" thing, he's trying to be dominant. Is he a younger horse? (Which leads me to my NEXT question, is he breeding his MOTHER and SISTERS?) Nice. People like you scare me. Seperate them! NOW!

It's a simple answer. Keep him away from them. A stallion grabs mares by the mane when breeding, and often they do it as a form of courtship or a display of dominancy. The only way to prevent it is separate them or make the mares wear neck sweats or mane tamers all the time.

hair pulling is actually really common with stallions. I'm not sure why they do it, but a friend of mine found like a chew stop type thing that was ok to put in the horses manes and tails. I'm not sure why they do it but i know a former teaser that a friend had, was tailless due to a stallion. i would say just do your best to keep your stally away from everyone else.
Good Luck and i hope it helps to know that your not the only one with hairless horses lol

my friend had that same problem so they did this method and it worked beautifully, but it took time. i would suggest brushing the horses mane at least 3 times a day (like morning and night feeding plus in the afternoon once or twice) and then when you bath it try blowdrying the mane to the correct side. she would go out periodically and check it then brush it so it lay right and she also clipped a few of the short hairs on the side she wanted it to fall on so that it would fall easilyier to that side, after time less and less of the mane with be on the wrong side and soon it will stay on the correct side almost always.

If your not using your horse for stud, maybe its time to geld him..If you have a stud on the property your going to have constant eruptions with the mares and others..That is usually a sign of mounting...So its time to pen him or put him in an area, where he cant hurt your others...A gelded horse makes a calmer horse....

He playing. This how horses do. Heck, my Studs do this all the time even to me, though I have taught them not to bite me as hard. When I play with them I even bite them and I mean I BITE as hard as I can or they not feel it. It a guy thing. Though some Mares can get pretty rough too.
What the Studs and me enjoy is my Truck. I get it in the Pasture and they be chasing me and I chase them in the truck, they be kicking and snorting. It fun, but, I do have a few dents in my truck.
Horses are large Animals and what is actually dangerous to us, is play to them.

Duh, he is wanting to mount them! Do you want your mares bred? If not, then he needs to go into another pasture.
