i know the blue one is the female but how do i know that it's a male?

As he grows,his body color changes from dull gray to flashy blue or yellow, and a prominent black stripe ("eye bar") appears across his face.

There are numerous species of cichlids and they come in all colors. It's impossible to say what color the male (or female for that matter) is unless we know what species it is.

It's really impossible to say without knowing what species of cichlid you have. If you don't know, you can try posting a link to a photo of the fish and hopefully someone here can identify it for you.

It depends on what type of cichlid and they come in different colors.

it is not easy to tell unless you know what kind of cichlid fish it is. however, generally speaking, males are either more brilliant in color or have higher contrast markings on their body. you may also be able to tell the gender by its behavior. males are more agressive and will become harder swimmers as they get older.

Without a species, no one can tell you what color the male is supposed to be.
