He was watching a game between 2 teams, both of which had a lot of black players. He said that on one team "they are tough. They've got tattoos. What a bunch of nappy headed hoes. Look at the other team, they look cute." That's pretty close to what he said. He was commenting about the difference in appearance between the two teams.
I do think it is inappropriate to call college students whores. But I guess he didn't mean that literally, but as it is often used in slang nowadays. Still inappropriate. Is nappy a bad word? He may be crude, but I think the reaction was overblown. I heard his apology and he seemed sincere to me. He's not a highly refined person, but I don't see any real malice in him. And he's not even that important.

That the womens bball team were "Nappy headed ho's..." I forgot what team it was for... (oh yeah RUTGERS!) but thats just not acceptable at all... very racist and degrading... plus the team is 95% black women...
