I have a small bed of daylilies that is full of bermudagrass. I want to get rid of the weeds without hurting my lilies. I know chemical control should always be a last resort, but I've tried pulling the grass out and it just comes back everytime. Is there anything on the market that is labeled safe for daylilies and readily available to the home gardener?

There are a number of excellent products available by different manufacturers. The one I am most familiar with is Grass B Gone by Ortho. It will kill Bermuda and other grasses without harming ornimentals.

Nothing. Your only choice (that I know of) is to dig out all the daylilies, then try to eradicate the bermuda with roundup. Bermuda is one of the toughest things to get rid of. You might want to consider digging out about 6 inches of the bed, putting in a barrier to stop bermuda from getting back in, then putting in clean dirt and replanting the day lilies; or building a raised bed in the same place.

Jane is talking about a pre emergant herbicide that works on seeds as they germinate, it will not work on grass roots.

You might try Round Up up on the grass if there is any green growth BEFORE the day lilies sprout. Try it in a small area first to make sure it does not affect your lilies. It shouldn't as long as there is not green growth on the lilies.

I can't remember the name of what you could use, but it comes in a granular form and you weed and, while the area is weed free, you sprinkle this over the ground, mulch and you will not have one weed. It works like a charm. Call your nearest garden center, give them this information and they should be able to tell you what it is. Sorry i can't remember the name, but I have to go and buy some soon--as soon as the snow stops.

I agree with "the gubmint". Sometimes, you've gotta take the difficult approach, to get it right!

I'm sorry, but I'm not aware of anything that will kill bermuda that won't kill daylillies.

Sorry..
