Imus is a moron for saying things like that. And it's not the first time, so I have no pity on him for having to go through the ordeal he's going through now.
By the same token, I find it hypocritical for Jesse Jackson to be complaining about it, as I can't recall him ever asking for forgiveness for calling New York City "hymie town".
As for Al Sharpton, who I respect in many ways, I have the same problem with him complaining....I don't recall him asking for forgiveness for basically holding the city of New York hostage during the completely bogus Tawana Bradley incident.
2 examples of the pot calling the kettle black. They're all in the wrong.

I disagree. I don't think it was a joke. It was just a hateful statement. Usually jokes have lead ups and punchlines, this had neither. It was just 100% pure Imus, insulting and derogitory. And you're right he has freedom of speech, and I would absolutely defend his right to say whatever he wanted. I also defend the right of people to speak out about it, to boycott his sponsors, etc. They aren't going to the courts to FORCE him off the air, they are voicing their opinions just like he was, it remains to see who will win the battle, but I'm suspecting Imus will come out on top since his ratings are pretty high and there doesn't appear to be a backlash from the sponsors.

I think his comments were rude and offensive. I think a lot of people (celebs) are rude and offensive and as long as they're on the correct side of the political fence--it's freedom of speech. I don't listen to Imus--but think he has apologized which is more than most people who talk out of their backsides do--so move on already! I'd love to see Rosie O'Donnell get suspended for a day or two. If they don't suspend her--leave this guy alone...........EQUAL TREATMENT for anyone who is a jerk.

Imus is an idiot, but people pay him good money to be an idiot.
He has said nothing different nor more offensive than so many Rappers Records say.
Where is the outrage against the black rappers? Double standard all over again.
At least he never caused anyone's death like Al Sharpton's racism did!

I think no one cared about Imus before... and I don't care about him now...
if someone makes a racist comment in the middle of the woods, do I really care? not really... it's horrible, but some people are stupid...
I care about Imus about as much as I care about a person in the middle of the woods...
if the one listener he had, wouldn't have told someone else Imus said it... no one would have even known he said it...

I think that it was an exceedingly stupid and inappropriate comment, and no more of a "joke" than the words of Michael Richards, the former Seinfeld star. Having said that, I'm uncomfortable with attempts to legislate stupidity and bad judgment away, since it infringes on free speech, and is based on the nebulous concept of what is or isn't "acceptable", "offensive", etc. I don't want anyone presuming to make those distinctions on my behalf.

Joke or not what he said was not only wrong but make all white people look bad. This is just ammo for those of the black community that think that white people are keeping them down. He should be made to live as a minority for a while and them maybe he can use what ever words he wants.

Imus should be fired. His remarks constitute hate speech. That he is defended by the most hateful and racist members of the right-wing isn't due to the fact the right-wing has a new-found respect for free speech; rather it is due to the fact that they embrace that racism and wish to promote those beliefs on a larger scale within our society. All efforts need to be employeed to curtail those actions before they have a chance to gain any traction.
