10key on the iMac freezes when I use it. Help!?

I am a new iMac user and am used to using the 10-key portion of the keyboard on PCs. However, whenever I use the 10-key portion on the Apple keyboard with the iMac, the program freezes. What is going on? Why put the 10-key on the keyboard if it doesn't work!?!

Call Apple tech support, the keyboard may be defective.
