Yes there is a difference. Usually you lose your mucus plug before you break your water. With my first pregnancy I lost my mucus plug, which actually looks mucus, on a Sunday and had my daughter on the Thursday of the same week. Now I'm 32 weeks pregnant and I lost my mucus plug yesturday and so far nothing. From what I hear you can lose your mucus plug halfway through your pregnancy and still go to term. As for the water, it literally looks like water. It shouldn't smell like anything and it should be clear.
When your water breaks it can either be a gush or a little drip.

They are not that same thing. Your mucus plug can come out weeks before you go into labor. Water breaking is different. Birth is going to happen within hours after your water breaking in most cases. Sometimes your water will break at the beginning of labor and sometimes it won't break until almost the end. Truthfully, having intact water until you are ready to push is ideal. It makes labor move more quickly and less painful. Usually if you do not deliver within 24 hours of your water breaking, the doc will want to induce or do a c-section due to the risk of infection.

You usually lose your mucus plug first, either to your knowledge or not...Then usually with in a few days your water may break, although sometimes it doesn't break until you are actually in labor. Having your membranes ruptured (water broke) can send you in to labor, but as with any rule there are exceptions. Once your water has broke you need to see a doctor or midwife, because your risk of infection increases.
To answer your question they are not the same thing although they can go hand in hand!

no they are not the same. you can lose your mucus plug and your water still not break. usually you will lose your mucus plug first but some people never lose theres. with some once they lose their mucus plug they go into labor within 48 hrs, but with others it may still be a few weeks. your water breaking will come sometime after the mucus plug. once again your water may not break and in that case a doctor will have to break it for you. once your water is broken though that is what helps cause you to go into labor.

The two events are mutually exclusive. You can lose your mucus plug from a few weeks to a few days before labor begins, and it can come out all at once or in pieces so small you don't even notice them.
The bag of waters breaking will feel like a warm gush like you just wet yourself. Or it might be a trickle that cannot be stopped by means that you would normally halt urine flow.

they are 2 different things, but occasionally happen at the same time. the mucous plug comes first. mine came 2 weeks before either of my sons were born. water breaking doesn't always start labor. with my first son, my water broke, and i had no contractions on my own for 2 days. they had to induce labor. with my second son, i started labor, but the doc had to break my water for me. any time the water breaks though, you need to go to labor and delivery. baby is at high risk of infection once the water breaks.

not the same thing water breaking (a big gush) means they like you to have the baby within 24 hours the mucus plug will just come out sometimes with a bit of color however you cannot rely on either to tell you your in labour as neither happened to me and i went into labour with my son just fine and not very many other people i talk to have their water break either i think its not very common but people think it is bc its a great way to show someone is going into labour on tv

The plug usually comes away first, but they can both go at the same time. My plug came away and my waters didnt break for a week afterwards. Then i didnt go into actual labour for 24 hours after that!
